At age 40 and sometimes sooner, testosterone levels for men start decreasing by an average rate of 1% per year or more. This is commonly referred to as Low-T. Testosterone is what makes us men and is essential for building muscle, staying lean and feeling like a man in every regard. Building the most lean muscle tissue and getting lean come from strength based workouts, proper nutrition and having the correct testosterone levels.

We are not talking about steroids, quite the opposite. Shape Plus does, not advocate steroid use, period! We are talking about supplementation of testosterone within healthy levels specifically guided by the medical community’s standards. We aren’t saying you need male hormone replacement therapy (TRT) if you are over 40, but we have seen first -hand how it improves overall well-being and results for those who need it. We want you to be informed and aware of the benefits in case you want to check it out.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) for Low-T and Strength Training

The correct amount of testosterone in your body will increase your strength dramatically with the appropriate training and nutritional program in place. In fact, your strength may double if your testosterone was previously low. Muscle recovery and repair time is considerably faster. How much strength you will gain and how lean you will get is determined by your training and your nutrition once your hormone levels are adjusted correctly.

Your desire to lift weights and workout may dramatically increase with your new found energy, strength gains and appearance. You may find yourself “jones-ing” to go to the gym because those aches and pains that you previously felt are completely gone or have subsided substantially.

Weight loss, strength gains, and fat burning

More muscle equals less fat! Your body will need more calories to fuel workouts, repair and grow lean muscle which will leave less calories to be stored as fat. The stronger you become and the heavier weights you lift will further increase your lean muscle tissue. More lean muscle will increase your metabolism making it much easier to utilize your fat stores for energy and lose excess weight.

The correct amount of testosterone can have these positive effects:

  • Increased muscle mass and bone density
  • Sense of vitality
  • Increased drive and motivation
  • Increased confidence
  • Increased energy
  • Increase in ability to focus
  • Increased libido and quality of erections
  • Annoying aches and pains may diminish or altogether go away

Low testosterone or Low-T can have these negative symptoms:

  • Decreased muscle mass, with increased body fat
  • Difficulty concentrating and memory
  • Decrease in hemoglobin and possibly mild anemia
  • Fragile bones – osteoporosis
  • Changes in cholesterol levels
  • Decreased drive and motivation
  • Insulin resistance / tendency towards type II diabetes
  • Decreased confidence
  • Decreased libido and quality of erections

Where should I go to have my testosterone levels checked and possibly start TRT?

It is important to go to a specialist (we wouldn’t recommend going to your family practice doctor for this). Many general practice physicians believe that being near the bottom of the testosterone scale, which is normally 300 -1100 ng/dL, is perfectly acceptable, and for some men, it is. However, many of us start feeling rough and have accompanying issues from testosterone dropping. We want to return to a feeling of vitality previously higher than a “low-normal” testosterone level.  So locating and utilizing a Denver testosterone replacement therapy specialist is very important.

Administering testosterone replacement therapy

After you are tested and approved for treatment, which can happen in one day to two weeks, there are a few ways to supplement your testosterone:

  1. You either administer your injection weekly or semi-weekly, which is very simple. It takes a minute or two, and there is no co-pay.
  2. Go to a clinic and receive an injection there weekly on average. There is a co-pay.

Because testosterone has been used by athletes to improve their performance, it is classified as a controlled substance by the FDA. As such, Testosterone needs to be prescribed and monitored by a physician. I recommend working with a physician who will treat to optimal, not just normal levels, and will also monitor and optimize related hormones like Estrogen, which can increase during treatment with Testosterone.

Blood work is done before starting therapy and typically again within 6-8 weeks to ensure you achieve optimal levels. Follow-up after that usually involves blood work and a visit with your physician twice a year.

We have specific doctors in the Denver area that we respect and trust. We can refer you to them, or you can research your own. We can also help walk you through this process if you choose Testosterone Replacement Therapy for Low-T and help make it simple.

I’ve been a member of Shape Plus for over two years now and there’s no better place to start — and maintain — your fitness goals! Greg was my first personal trainer and he is simply the best. I have consistently hit my goals due to the nutrition and diet that’s been created specifically for me and of course from form, posture, and confidence training necessary for weight lifting. What is the cost of testosterone replacement therapy?

The cost of Testosterone Replacement Therapy is covered by many insurance policies. TRT is much cheaper for the insurance companies than treating the effects of men with low testosterone such as depression, no drive to excel at work, medical issues regarding weight gain, slower healing, fragile bones, etc.  If insurance is paying for it then it commonly costs $60 – $500 per every 10 weeks.  The difference in cost is self-administration vs. having a clinic administer your testosterone.

This topic and discussion are becoming very common among men these days.  Whether you are having this discussion on the golf course, in the pool hall, or at soccer practice while watching your kids play, Low-T is something that is finally being freely discussed just as commonly as menopause for women. They have had hormone supplementation for years whereas Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is relatively new for men and it certainly is about time!

Our knowledge and experience with (TRT) and weight training will benefit you greatly.
